Don't Thank Israel - Demand an Explanation

[Published, Richmond Times-Dispatch, November 9, 2007] Editor, Times-Dispatch: The editorial, "Thank Israel," should ask a question of why, not offer praise or thanks. Until now, neither Israel nor the United States has provided further explanation or proof after Israel bombed Syria for allegedly having a nuclear reactor. After the botched war in Iraq that was conducted on the basis of weak intelligence, the American public deserves, and should demand, explanations.

I'm not comfortable with a simple line about intelligence indicating the possibility of a nuclear reactor. I need pure, simple facts. We must begin to demand accountability from our government. The American public continues to be left in the dark with vague explanations -- or no explanations -- for serious actions. This must be stopped. Neither the U.S. nor Israel should take forceful action without informing the public and exhausting all peaceful means. The region is unstable enough as it is.

Forget the thanks; let's first ask why.
