Carlos E. Sluzki, MD was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He received his MD degree from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine, and his psychoanalytic training from the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association Institute of Psychoanalysis. He was trained in family therapy at the Mental Research Institute (MRI), Palo Alto, California, in the mid-60s, during the early days of that discipline. He was a core member of the team that developed (1960-71) the pioneering Department of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Residency Program at the Gregorio Araoz Alfaro Hospital, under the leadership of Prof. Mauricio Goldenberg.
Dr. Sluzki migrated to the US in December 1971, under an FFRP Advanced Research Fellowship and a John S. Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. He has been Director of the MRI (1980-83) as well as Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco, the University of California Los Angeles, the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and currently, at George Washington University School of Medicine. He has also been Editor-in-Chief of the journals Acta Psiquiatrica y Psicologica de America Latina, Family Process, and American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. He is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, of the American College of Psychiatrists, and honorary member of multiple professional organizations worldwide. Dr. Sluzki currently resides in Washington DC, where he is Professor at the College of Health and Human Services, and the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, both at George Mason University. He has delivered countless keynote and panel presentations and conducted workshops worldwide, with special emphasis on family therapy, social networks, violence and victimization, refugees and human rights.
