The service-learning initiative is undertaken as part of the larger project. In this segment we will develop, implement and assess a service-learning program in Monrovia, Liberia. Undergraduate and Masters students will collaborate with Liberian non-government organizations in facilitating training workshops, mediation, community event planning and other peacebuilding activities.
By analyzing several forms of assessment data collected before, during and after the Liberia trip, project researchers will be able to 1) assess the effectiveness of the trip activities in developing technical skills, applying theory to practice and personal and professional development, 2) establish best practices for the future expansion of the University’s service-learning initiative and 3) gather feedback from community organizations (NGOs) in exploring their opinions and ideas about the collaboration with GMU faculty and students as well as the usefulness and transferability of trainings provided by GMU faculty and students. This part of the project is led by Dr. Patricia A. Maulden and Ms. Lisa E. Shaw (faculty).
