Biography

Vandy Kanyako graduated from the University of Sierra Leone in 1998 with a BA (Hons) in History. He received his MA in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands in 2002 and a Masters in Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame in 2003. Between 2008 and 2009 he served as Senior Program Officer at World Learning in Washington DC. From 2004 and 2005 he served as the Coordinator of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) in New York which brought together 1000 participants from governments, the UN and civil society at the UN Headquarters in July 2005 to explore the role of civil society in conflict prevention. He is the founder of Peacelinks-Sierra Leone, a local NGO that reintegrates vulnerable children. In 2001 he was awarded the Hague Appeal for Peace Prize in Athens, Greece, for his conflict mitigation work. He has consulted for the International Community College Town Center, World Learning and the NationalDemocratic Institute in Virginia and Washington DC respectively. He has written on civil society, democratization and the political economy of peacebuilding. He holds a PhD in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University where he is currently teaching.
