Latin American Initiative

In 2013 CPP started new activities focused on Latin America. The goal is to support present initiatives in Latin American universities, or to help establish new programs where they are wanted. To a lesser degree CPP could support other entities, such as non-governmental organizations, to strengthen or create their conflict resolution programs.

ICAR –the S-CAR predecessor-- has had a long relationship with Latin America, in particular through the summer courses, carried out almost yearly for more than 10 years, and also through direct interventions. These interventions were at-hoc, not following a determined plan. Now CPP will continue ICAR’s experience in a more focused and systematic way, and will be the home of the summer courses for Latin Americans.

Projects

Summer Seminar

In partnership with Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, and with support from the Organization of American States (OAS), CPP carried out, in Bogotá, its 10thsummer seminar from June 5thto 13th  2014. The subject of the 2014 seminar was “Conflict Resolution in the Exploitation and Management of Natural Resources”. Participants were professionals from state and local governments, community organizations and the private sector who are involved in carrying out projects in natural resource exploitation. The presenters were Latin American experts in managing these conflicts, as well as academics from S-CAR and from  Javeriana University.

Considering the importance and high relevance of the 2014 summer course’ theme, the 2015 course will again focus on the Exploitation and Management of Natural resources. The course will take place from July 6th to 18th in Lima, Perú, in partnership with the Catholic University.

CPP is working in partnership with the Kroc Institute at Notre Dame, to bring Latin American Universities to the Kroc’s summer program in June 2015 to help universities and colleges start or strengthen their conflict resolution programs. So far two universities (from Peru and Costa Rica) have committed their participation.
